3-, 4-, and 5-Axis Machining

Built for programs where multi-face access in a single setup is the requirement,
not a convenience. Compound angles, tight positional tolerances, and complex
surface requirements handled without repositioning the part.

5-Axis Machining

Multi-Side Access. One Setup.

5-axis machining moves the cutting tool and the part simultaneously across 3, 4, or 5 axes, allowing the machine to approach from nearly any angle without repositioning. When a component has features on multiple faces that must hold tight positional tolerances to each other, eliminating the need to unclamp and re-clamp the part is what makes the tolerance achievable.

Fixturing a part multiple times across multiple setups introduces stack-up error at every handoff. Multi-axis machining removes most of those handoffs. Gray Manufacturing Technologies in Denver, NC, R&D Machine in Oldsmar, FL, and Advanced Machining & Tooling in Salisbury, NC are among the Compass Precision facilities with dedicated 5-axis capability and the programming depth to use it at production volume.

Several of these facilities run automation equipment alongside their multi-axis machines, enabling lights-out production on qualified programs and improving throughput without adding labor.

Programs That Benefit From 5-Axis

  • Aerospace structural components, engine hardware, and housings with angled surfaces and intersecting bores
  • Defense system components requiring tight tolerances across multiple features in a single part qualification
  • Space hardware manufactured to AS9100D with full documentation and material traceability
  • Orthopedic implants, surgical instrument bodies, and medical housings with multi-face features
  • Semiconductor capital equipment components requiring flatness and angular precision held across large aluminum surfaces

Distributed Multi-Axis
Capacity Across the Platform

Multi-axis capacity distributed across multiple facilities means Compass Precision absorbs volume surges, runs programs in parallel, and protects schedule integrity when one facility is at capacity. For aerospace and defense programs in particular, not depending on a single machine or a single shop is part of what makes the platform a more reliable long-term manufacturing partner.
