Compass Precision Operating Company Adds Capacity and Capabilities
Charlotte, NC – December 20, 2022 – Quality Products & Machine proudly announced Tuesday that it has taken delivery of a new Haas VF-7 vertical machining center to meet growing customer demand. Quality Products is an operating company of Compass Precision, a Charlotte-based manufacturer of custom, close-tolerance metal components for mission critical applications.
“We already had two Haas VF-7 CNC mills,” explained Quality Products President Kevin Farmer. “But key customers in the power generation and A&D markets have been pushing us for more. So we are adding this third VF-7. We will be bringing in some delivery dates and booking orders we couldn’t otherwise.”
“Everyone here is excited about getting this new machine,” added Greg Donaldson, Quality’s Operations Manager. “Our people have done a good job keeping up with increased orders. But having a third Haas VF-7 allows us to do more.”
Quality Products has a large portfolio of CNC vertical and horizontal mills, lathes, and coordinate measuring machines. Alongside this equipment is a complete fabrication shop with press brakes, laser cutters, turret punch press, and welding machines. One of Quality’s differentiating capabilities is the ability to do both CNC precision machining and metal fabrication in-house.
“I am still pretty new here,” said Dwayne Davis, Quality’s Machining Manager who joined the company about a year ago. “But I really like the way Quality Products operates. We treat both customers and employees really well. And with Compass Precision’s backing, we are investing in new equipment, fixtures, tools, software, and anything else we need.”
Quality Products’ new Haas VF-7 represents the nineteenth new CNC machine that Compass Precision has purchased in past three years. In 2022 alone, Compass added a DMG Mori NTX 2500 multi-tasking mill/turn machine at Advanced Machining (Compass operating company in Salisbury, NC); a Haas VF-2 vertical machining and a Doosan Lynx lathe at Tri-Tec Industries (Charlotte, NC); and a Milltronics’ VM6030 IL vertical machining center at Douglas Machining (Winona, MN). A DMG Mori NHX 4000 horizontal machining center is on order at Strom Manufacturing (North Plains, OR).
“We have been aggressively adding capacity and capabilities because our customers need them,” explained Compass Vice President of Sales Jim Miller. “Quality Products’ new Haas VF-7 will immediately be put to use serving existing customers. But as we continue to invest, we are looking for additional customers, too. Compass’s operating companies have a lot to offer.”
Quality Products specializes in producing precision metal components and subassemblies for aerospace, defense, power generation, and specialty industrial markets. The firm operates from a modern 47,000-square-foot facility on Westinghouse Boulevard in Charlotte. It has about 35 employees and supplies customers down the street, across town, and around the country.
Compass Precision was founded in 2019 by Gary Holcomb and two private equity partners based upon the simultaneous purchase of three precision CNC machining companies in North Carolina – Advanced Machining & Tooling (Salisbury, NC); Quality Products & Machine; and Tri-Tec Industries (Charlotte, NC). Compass added Gray Manufacturing Technologies (Denver, NC) to the fold in August 2020, then acquired Douglas Machining Services (Winona, MN) in March 2021. Since then, Compass has purchased R&D Machine (Oldsmar, FL) in April 2022 and Strom Manufacturing (North Plains, OR) in July 2022, bringing its number of operating companies to seven.
