Compass Shop in Charlotte Modernizes Its Parking Lot

“It’s not just a parking lot,” exclaimed Kevin Farmer, President of Quality Products, one of Compass Precision’s three original operating units. “It’s the very first thing customers, visitors, and employees see when they come to our facility. Pretty hard to convince people we make great parts, which we do, when the parking lot is cracked and the lines are faded.”

So in addition to all the investments Compass is making inside Quality’s 47,000 square foot building (for latest equipment addition, see Quality Products Invests in Additional Press Brake (April 25, 2023) – Compass Precision, LLC ), the company is paying attention to the little things, like where people park their cars.

Quality Products selected Southeastern Sealcoating & Striping of Mt. Holly, NC for this project. Last month, Southeastern thoroughly cleaned Quality’s 42,000 square foot parking lot, saw-cut out two damaged sections of pavement and replaced with hot asphalt, filled over 4,000 lineal feet of cracks, seal coated the entire lot, and repainted all stripes and markings.

“It’s hard to explain what a difference it makes to have a great-looking parking lot,” stated Greg Donaldson, Quality’s Operations Manager. “Since we became part of Compass four years ago, we have consistently invested back into our business. Most of our purchases have been for new equipment. But we are also spending money to improve our physical infrastructure.”

Qualities revitalized parking lot is the second physical-type infrastructure investment Compass has made this summer. Just a few weeks ago, Douglas Machining, Compass’s shop in Minnesota, announced that it had installed a new elastomeric roof coating on its Winona, MN facility (Douglas Machining Gets New Roof (July 25, 2023) – Compass Precision, LLC).

Both Quality Products and Douglas Machining are operating companies of Compass Precision, a Charlotte-based manufacturer of custom, close-tolerance metal components for mission critical applications.

Founded in 1962, Quality Products provides precision machining and fabrication services for OEM manufacturers in the power generation, aerospace, and defense industries. The company is certified to ISO 9001:2015 as well as ASME Section IX and AWS D1.1, D1.2, and D1.6. Its equipment base includes numerous high-speed 3 and 4-axis vertical and horizontal CNC machining centers, turning centers, and a full complement of metal cutting, bending, punching, and welding machines.

“Quality Products and its sister companies under Compass are all making investments to grow their businesses,” explained Jim Miller, Compass’s Vice President of Sales. “We are working to continually expand our capabilities, capacities, and infrastructure.”

Compass Precision was founded in 2019 with the purchase of three precision CNC machining companies in North Carolina – Quality Products & Machine (Charlotte, NC); Tri-Tec Industries (Charlotte, NC); and Advanced Machining & Tooling (Salisbury, NC). Compass added Gray Manufacturing Technologies (Denver, NC) to the fold in August 2020, then acquired Douglas Machining Services in March 2021.

Since then, Compass has purchased three more operating companies to bring its total to eight. Compass acquired R&D Machine (Oldsmar, FL) in April 2022, Strom Manufacturing (North Plains, OR) in July 2022, and Bergeron Machine (Westford, MA) in April 2023.
