New Office Manager Receives High Honor

Bergeron Machine has been experiencing a transition in their office manager roles over the last year. But thanks to Joey Sum, the position is stabilizing at the Compass Precision operating company.

For his efforts, Compass has named Joey its first Employee of the Month of the new year.

”Joey has really embraced the Office Manager role,” explained Dave Giampa, President of Bergeron Machine. “He learns quickly.”

Earning the Jan. 2025 nomination, Joey is the 58th recipient of the Compass Employee of the Month award. He is also the fifth Bergeron employee to receive the honor.

Joey began at Bergeron Machine in March 2024 as JobBOSS Coordinator after five years in customer service and pricing compliance at Werfen USA. During his 10 months, Bergeron has lost two office managers to relocation and retirement. Victoria Rudiman still works remotely for Bergeron, but Joey became the operating company’s lone office manager on site in August.

He utilizes his skills in a variety of ways, including in Bergeron’s accounting and customer service. Joey also holds HR responsibilities and assists with shipping and packaging along with production planning.

Joey enjoys the demanding tasks Bergeron presents every day.

“When I first started, it was a new challenge. I had never worked in this kind of industry before, so I think everything was a new opportunity to learn something. That’s what keeps it exciting for me.”

An office manager role wasn’t where Joey initially aimed to be in his career. He first went to pre-dental school. When he discovered he didn’t like it, Joey began pursuing a graphic design degree.

But while looking for work during school, Joey landed a position at Werfen through a recruiting company. He enjoyed it so much, he turned his focus to the “corporate world.”

Half a decade later, he heard about the opportunity at Bergeron through Production Manager Bory Vuth.

Joey said his 2025 new year’s resolution is to not have a new year’s resolution. But he still has a goal for his role at Bergeron this year.

“Definitely want to smooth out all the bumps that I’m still learning and get to a good daily cadence so things move more smoothly for me,” Joey said. “That’s my goal.”

Joey is originally from Lowell, Massachusetts, but his parents came to the United States from Cambodia in the 1970s. His parents met in the U.S. and had three children – Joey along with his older brother and younger sister.

About eight years ago, Joey moved to Dracut, MA.

In his free time, he likes spending time with friends and family. He also enjoys trying new restaurants, reading and playing ping pong. Joey’s current favorite genres of books are young adult and inspiration.
